Who really payed for this oil spill?

Yeah sure, the BP oil giant paid millions/billions of dollars cleaning up this oil spill, not to mention paying for the lawsuits that followed, but I think the group that payed the most was probably the animals. They had nothing to do with this, but then thousands of them ended up killed, or seriously sick from there habitats being polluted. When you think about it, this may or may not have been possible to avoid, but even if it were possible to be avoided, I wonder if the oil companies would have even bothered to take such precautions? This was some sort of freak accident, I believe, so after this mess is blown over, will they forget about what happened this time, and continue with their same routines? Do we never learn? When I think about who pays the most for something like this happening, it makes me rather sad, because they can't even do anything to stop this from happening, it's basically just dumped on the animals and marine life all of a sudden, and they have no clue what is even happening. I think it should be neccessary to take more precautions when transporting large amounts of substances such as oil anywhere, to avoid disasters like this.
